How To Use Keg Systems For Homebrew

A Quick Video Of Our Range

Assembling An iKegger Mini Keg System

Kegging From A BrewDroid Fermenter (Or Other Tapped Bucket Fermenter)

Assembling A Kegerator

A MORE IN DEPTH LOOK AT ASSEMBLING THE DOUBLE BALL LOCK TAP SYSTEM
  • Use the tap to tighten the cone shaped piece onto the black disconnect (the teeth interlock)
  • The 74g adapter does not come with the regulator now as the sodastream adapter is now made to fit the 16g adapter
  • Check all seals are in place and it is a good idea to use keg lube on seals, posts and threads
  • Some of our regs don't have OFF marked, just make sure they are unwound anti-clockwise completely before inserting gas.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR IKEGGER

  • When you first get your iKegger it is a good idea to give it a good clean with hot water and sanitiser. Do not use dish soap! We can supply you with a no rinse sanitiser that only needs 2mls in each litre of water so it lasts a long time.
  • I generally just rinse with hot water once the keg empties and sanitise before I refill it. I have never had beer go bad on me just doing this.
  • For home brew and large kegs the methods in the video is most reliable however it uses a lot of gas. After 12 months of testing and talking to other experience homebrewers I think it is perfectly safe to sanitise the kegs and tip out the water through the open mouth and fill through it as well.

METHOD TO FILL SANITISED KEGS FROM FERMENTER TAP

  • The video shows transferring freshly brewed beer from the fermenter to the kegs via a disconnect. Some will argue this isn't necessary, you can just siphon into the opened keg with a hose that reaches the bottom of it
  • That is correct it will be faster but with more chance of infection / oxygenation.
  • This method leaves no chance of infection or introduction of oxygen.
  • If possible "cold-crashing" or chilling your beer for a few days in the fermenter before you transfer it will help to clear the beer and mean you can move straight to force carbonating.

DAISY CHAINING KEGS TOGETHER

This gives you 2 ways to use our 23L keg packages (or any other 2 kegs / fermentasaurus).

  1. Store the larger keg at room temp (cooler the better though) and fill the smaller keg as needed to chill and carbonate.
  2. Store both kegs in the fridge and be able to remove the smaller keg whenever you like to take with you to a BBQ or just into the house from the man cave.

Use gas pressure injected into the larger keg to push beer into the smaller keg, you will need to release pressure in it as you go to maintain the flow.

FORCE CARBONATING WITH IKEGGER

  • Kegs can not be filled all the way, you need to leave a head space to fill with gas so don't fill past the upright walls of the keg. Leave the domed top empty at least, more space means more surface area means faster carbonating.
  • Beer needs to be chilled prior to force carbonating
  • Using the liquid disconnect on the liquid post will make it carbonate more quickly but you can use the gas inlet with a grey disconnect too (this is safer).
  • If you run out of gas with the regulator connected to the liquid post it will get full of beer and break, only do it under close supervision. Regs damaged this way are not covered by warranty.
  • 3 methods:
    • low and slow = 12psi for 48 hours+ will not over carbonate
    • faster = 20-25psi for 12- 24 hours, may over carbonate
    • fastest = 20-25psi swirl / shake for a couple minutes then rest.
  • If under carbonated then leaving for longer or swirling the keg while putting 25psi of CO2 into it will fix it.
  • If over carbonated turn off regulator, release the pressure then allow time for gas to leave the solution. Try pouring with just the gas pressure in the keg.
  • If you intend to do a lot of force carbonating it is a good idea to get either a sodastream bottle or a 2.6kg gas bottle we supply adapters for either bottle to use with your mini regulator.

THE BEST BIT - HOMEBREW KEG IN THE FRIDGE DOOR

  • Just a quick video showing the Johnson keg in the fridge door
  • Carbonated and ready to drink 24hrs after kegging from the fermenter
  • Beer generally improves with age, we don't recommend drinking this quickly after kegging if you can help it.
  • We have 2 x 19L kegs beside the fridge filled with un-carbonated beer.
  • We use 4L "Johnsons" to chill and carbonate our beer as we drink it.
  • This saves us the expense of setting up a full kegerator system but still having all the benefits!

THE GROWLER AND THE BBW (4L GROWLER)
  • This video only applies to the insulated growlers not to the mini kegs
  • The double wall all stainless steel construction with a vacuum between works as a thermos keeping drinking either hot or cold for up to 10 hours
  • We have tested them aganst many others on the market and are confident that they are the best out there.
  • The only possible downside is if you do not finish the growler before it gets warm it will take a long time to chill again unless you transfer the drink to a mini keg.
